For those buyers, the question is no longer "Can I bid?" but "Should I make my bid in person or online?"

The greatest con is the hectic, competitive atmosphere. Overbidding is a real risk, possibly to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. So is missing your bid as the auctioneer moves rapidly from car to car. Inventory is also limited to whatever is in the house that day.

Online Pros and Cons

Online buyers have access to a much larger inventory of exotic vehicles, including rare and very high-value ones overseas. With cars being listed days or weeks in advance, you can thoroughly research and compare prospects. If you’re closeted behind your computer screen, you’re much less likely to throw your hand up in a fit of bidding-induced madness and blurt out a number you  didn’t intend.

Of course, you’re limited in how much information you can get about the vehicle. Shipping costs and logistics can also be complicated, as can returns or disputes. For a first-time buyer, the inability to inspect a car in person does pose a significant risk. A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) by a qualified technician is strongly recommended before bidding on any vehicle online.

There is no single right answer. It depends on your comfort level, budget, and how much research you are willing to do.

Perhaps the best solution: go to the in-person auctions without the intent to buy a car, and take an experienced person with you. Sit in cars. Talk to people. Drink in the bidding process and get a feel for how to navigate it. Then decide if you’d prefer the research-heavy online process or the in-person auction.
