In-Person or Online Exotic Car Auctions: Which Is Better for the First-Time Buyer?

Posted on March 23, 2026 in Exotic Car Maintenance

Washington D.C. Exotic Car SpecialistHistorically, exotics auctions happened in person, usually with much pomp and circumstance. They were exclusive and often targeted high-end collectors in a way that sometimes made it difficult for newcomers to enter the scene. For all but the ultra-rich, it could turn into a game of "who you know" to get in. The internet changed that. Now, luxury vehicles priced into the millions can be bid on online, and it’s opened the market up to new buyers in 2026. For those buyers, the question is no longer "Can I bid?" but "Should I make my bid in person or online?"

Unless a first-time buyer is completely certain about the car they want, this can be difficult. A Northern Virginia exotic car specialist can help you understand the trade-offs of both methods before you put money on the line.

How Does Bidding Work at In-Person and Online Exotic Car Auctions?

At an in-person auction, you typically register in advance, pay a deposit (which may be partially or fully refunded depending on the auction), and receive a bidder number. Most major auction houses hold a preview period before the event, sometimes a full day, where registered bidders can walk the lot, open doors, check paint work, and review condition reports.

When the auction begins, a live auctioneer moves through vehicles one at a time. Bidding can move very quickly – sometimes 60 seconds or less per car. If your bid wins, you usually have a short window (often 24 to 48 hours) to complete payment and arrange pickup or transport. There’s little room to back out if your bid wins. It’s a thrilling, high-speed, sometimes chaotic experience, not unlike the cars themselves.

Online auctions are very similarly formatted. After registering and verifying your identity on the platform, you browse active listings and review whatever documentation the seller has provided: photos, inspection reports, service records, and sometimes a video walkaround. Most online auctions run on a set countdown clock, though many extend the timer automatically if a bid comes in during the final minutes. If you win, the platform typically collects payment within a few days. You then coordinate shipping or pickup directly.

The key difference between the two is time. Online auctions give you days or even weeks to research a specific car, compare similar listings, and decide on your maximum bid without the frenetic atmosphere of an in-person auction.

The Trade-Offs of In-Person and Online Exotic Car Auctions

The most obvious trade-off is whether you get to inspect a car with your own eyes before purchase or not. Not being able to see a car in person before buying doesn’t necessarily make online auctions a bad option, though.

In-Person Pros and Cons

The biggest pro: hands-on inspection, including being able to sit in a car before committing. You can ask staff and the many other car enthusiasts present questions as needed. You can also see what other bidders are prepared to pay.

The greatest con is the hectic, competitive atmosphere. Overbidding is a real risk, possibly to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. So is missing your bid as the auctioneer moves rapidly from car to car. Inventory is also limited to whatever is in the house that day.

Online Pros and Cons

Online buyers have access to a much larger inventory of exotic vehicles, including rare and very high-value ones overseas. With cars being listed days or weeks in advance, you can thoroughly research and compare prospects. If you’re closeted behind your computer screen, you’re much less likely to throw your hand up in a fit of bidding-induced madness and blurt out a number you  didn’t intend.

Of course, you’re limited in how much information you can get about the vehicle. Shipping costs and logistics can also be complicated, as can returns or disputes. For a first-time buyer, the inability to inspect a car in person does pose a significant risk. A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) by a qualified technician is strongly recommended before bidding on any vehicle online.

Which Type of Auction Is Better for Buying Your First Exotic Car?

There is no single right answer. It depends on your comfort level, budget, and how much research you are willing to do.

Perhaps the best solution: go to the in-person auctions without the intent to buy a car, and take an experienced person with you. Sit in cars. Talk to people. Drink in the bidding process and get a feel for how to navigate it. Then decide if you’d prefer the research-heavy online process or the in-person auction. In either case, a pre-purchase inspection is a smart move.
