Are Older Exotic Cars a Better Investment Than New Models?

Posted on March 09, 2026 in Exotic Car Maintenance

Baltimore, MD Exotic Car TechnicianThe old car vs new car debate can be polarizing, just like anything else. You’ll never convince the die-hards that one is better than the other. But if you’re on the fence about whether an old Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Maserati is better than a new one in 2026, a Philadelphia exotic car technician can give you the full pros-and-cons rundown.

The short answer to this debate: it depends on the car (of course), but many older models often outperform new ones as long-term investments.

Do Older Exotic Cars Tend to Appreciate in Value?

Certain cars do appreciate in value, rather than lose their value quickly as vehicles normally do. Cars from roughly 1980 through the early 2000s have emerged as the strongest performers in the collector market.

These represent the last era of purely analog, naturally aspirated performance, and they have dedicated followings who are increasingly willing to pay top dollar. The world is never going to produce gorgeous pieces quite like these again, and people know it. Consider a few examples from recent auction activity and market tracking:

  • Curated reports that the Ferrari F50 saw its average sale price reach $5.3 million, a jump of over 60 percent in a single year.
  • A 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV sold for $3.9 million a couple of years ago, up from roughly $1 million a decade earlier.
  • The Porsche Carrera GT, originally priced around $450,000, now regularly fetches $1.5 to $2 million at auction.
  • Ferrari 458 Italia examples have climbed significantly in value over just the past two years.

The trend driving all of this is fairly straightforward: As new performance cars go hybrid or fully electric, the older generation of pure combustion exotics becomes rarer and more desirable. What was once just an older car is becoming a collectible older car.

How Do New Exotic Models Compare as Investments?

New exotic cars are not bad investments, per se, but they come with more risk. Most new exotics lose value the moment they leave the dealership, and that depreciation can be steep in the first few years.

There are exceptions. Limited-production new models (think allocation-only Ferraris or final-edition Lamborghinis) can appreciate immediately. But for the average buyer purchasing a standard production model, depreciation might be your greatest enemy.

As an example, the Ferrari SF90 and 296 GTB have both shown higher depreciation compared to older mid-engine Ferraris like the 458 and 488 Pista (which have actually begun to appreciate). New exotic SUVs like the Lamborghini Urus have also seen steep drops; some models lost close to 9% in a single year.

Things that make new exotic models more likely to hold value include:

  • Very limited production numbers
  • Special or final-edition designation
  • High demand with controlled allocation
  • Strong racing or motorsport heritage tied to that specific model

What Affects an Exotic Car's Investment Value Most?

Whether you’re buying old or new, the same core factors determine whether your car’s value grows or drops over time.

The Biggest Drivers of Exotic Car Value

Rarity

Fewer units produced equals higher long-term demand.

Condition

Low mileage and pristine exterior and interior condition will garner significant premiums.

Service history

A documented, complete maintenance record can be the difference between a top-dollar sale and a discounted one – or no sale at all.

Originality

Unmodified, factory-spec cars consistently outperform modified counterparts in exotics.

Factory certification

For Ferrari, Classiche certification confirms originality and can dramatically boost resale value.

The last point matters more than many owners realize. A well-maintained exotic with full documentation from factory-certified technicians is a fundamentally different asset than one with a spotty or incomplete service history.
